Don’t expect the unexpected from Gavin O’Connor’s tale of a family of New York cops in strife, and you won’t be disappointed.
The first part of the film is an edgy, accomplished thriller as Ed Norton’s good cop tries to track down a cop-killer while his bad cop brother-in-law (Colin Farrell) tries to get there first. The strictly need-to-know narrative ramps up the tension and foreboding as Norton uncovers some home truths, against brother Noah Emmerich and father Jon Voight’s best advice. Fine performances from the male leads- notably a refreshingly vulnerable Voight- create juicy characters despite the over-boiled script.
O’Connor crunches gears a bit as he shifts from action to moral dilemma, but powers through to a rousing finale only slightly marred by an ill-advised fist fight and an ‘oh, by the way…’ revelation.
